Getting Started

Like most new milestones your baby reaches, introducing solids is a constantly changing area that will continue to evolve as your baby does. The best place to start is by doing some research to get yourself prepared for this new step in your baby's development.

Familiarise yourself with the indicators your baby will demonstrate to let you know they are ready to start solids.

Decide which method best suits you and your family; baby-led or spoon feeding?
Will homemade or store bought work better for you?

If opting for homemade, shop for suitable foods; for example pumpkin and pear, prepared in a very smooth consistency for your baby are great options for first foods however there are some foods which are best left until your baby is a little older and more established on solids.

Plan when you will introduce new foods to your baby and what you will offer.

Understand the role baby's milk will continue to play and the best times to introduce foods to your little one.
Consider establishing a routine, if you don't already have one, as you begin to offer food to your baby at similar times each day.
