Once you’re over the beginning phase of introducing solids to your wee one, you quickly become aware of the need to continually offer them new and different flavours and textures… but coming up with new ideas can be hard enough, let alone when you’re faced with the added challenge of little ones that have been advised by their doctor to follow a modified diet due to allergies or intolerances. We know… we’ve been there! Where do you even start?!
So, you asked… and we created…. 10 of our little ones’ favourite allergy-friendly finger foods. We’re so aware that time is everything when you’re a parent, so all of these recipes are quick and easy to make… AND they can be frozen, meaning no more last minute panic about what you can offer your wee ones or take when heading out and about with a child who has some special dietary requirements. A little time spent now, and you reap the rewards in the days and weeks that follow.
All the recipes included in this collection are free from the common allergens:
Gluten (or can be made gluten free).
They are also refined sugar free, so you can feel confident and happy offering them to your little one.
The recipes have been designed and tested to be fairly adaptable - that is to say we’ve made sure they are all free of all of the above common allergens, but if your little ones don’t require exclusion of all of these things, you don’t need to go out of your way to buy special ingredients. For example, if your little can have dairy products, you can replace the dairy free milk in these recipes with your baby’s milk or cow’s milk in the same quantity. Similarly with gluten - if your wee one requires a gluten free diet, you can use gluten free flour in these recipes and instructions for this are included; however, if your wee one is ok with gluten, please just use the regular flour you have in the pantry.
What age are these finger foods suitable from? Once you have introduced all ingredients separately and they are well tolerated and your little one is confidently eating finger foods, they are ready for the recipes in this guide. For most babies, this will be by the time they are Stage Three, or approximately 8-9 months.
NOTE: Sprout Baby does not recommend the exclusion of any food groups from your baby or toddler’s diet, unless medically indicated. If you are concerned about food allergies or intolerances in relation to your child, please seek individualised medical advice from their doctor in the first instance.
